The most sustainable product is what is already in your closet. The next is the piece that will last the longest. Sustainability is a pretty big deal to us, so we've taken a few extra steps in an effort to create a smaller footprint and a positive impact.
"8 million tons of waste end up in our seas every single year. 640 thousand tons of fishing nets are abandoned at the bottom of the ocean." ¹
Let's talk about microplastics ~ they come from nylon, polyester, lycra... which is what most swimwear is made from. These materials are incredibly stretchy and strong, which is why so many brands use them for their suits.
While there is truly no "perfect" sustainable option, we do have access to a pretty good recycled alternative. Companies dedicated to this work take ocean-bound plastic, such as water bottles, old carpets, and fishing nets, and turn them into fibers to eventually be made into recycled nylon and polyester.
All Earthy suits are made from OEKO TEX certified regenerated nylon & spandex (a.k.a. non-toxic, recycled materials).
Looking forward: There are bio-based (aka plant-based) nylons and other natural polyester alternatives being developed as we speak. The technology is seriously cool! Unfortunately, these fibers and fabrics aren't quite ready for public use yet in the US (some brands may use them, but they are currently less accessible or not at all available to small brand owners like myself). I continue to monitor these developments as they occur, but until then, our fabric of choice has been those made from regenerated and recycled materials.
Plastic-free, recycled, & recyclable packaging
We wanted to create a fun unboxing experience while also keeping it as simple as possible. We are proud to be plastic free with recycled kraft mailers, recycled paper and tissue, even recyclable shipping labels. All of our packaging can be reused and recycled. Again, it's not prefect, but it's an important effort we're making to decrease our footprint.
If you have any questions or ideas on how we can make Earthy that much kinder to the planet, send us a message. We're always looking for ways to be better!
